The Teacher: Day 23, part 1

Jesus Knows

Picture of, The Garden of Gethsemane, taken on my first trip to Israel

Please read John Chapter 18.

John 18 verse 1 mentions a garden (the NIV translation says olive grove).  This is one of those places in the Holy Land, that you can be 99.99% sure of…that this is the place. It is the olive grove, or garden, that John speaks of…the Garden of Gethsemane.  Some of these olive trees are over 2,000 years old so, yes, they would have (99.99% sure) been there the night of Jesus’ arrest.

The Scripture (see John 18:1-12) says that Jesus came to this place often, meeting with the Disciples.  It is no surprise that Judas knew exactly where to find Jesus that night. Consider what we know and believe.  When the people cried “blessed is the King of Israel that cometh in the name of the Lord” (chapter 12), they would have crowned Him King, but Jesus departed from them. Now they came to take Him to the cross and He offered Himself.  We know and believe that He came to suffer, die and be raised from death, for us.  We can see, without a doubt, that Jesus and the Father (who are one) were in control of the entire situation. It is very interesting that Jesus’ Disciples were not arrested with him, considering the attack by Peter (verse 10).  Do you think this also was the power and intervention of the Father (that only Jesus was arrested)?  I’m sure it was.  Then verse 12 says that Jesus was taken and bound.  He was taken and bound for our sins, so that we would not be bound to our sins…..

Thought to Ponder: …..to free us from the power and penalty of sin.  Jesus knows, and knew all that would take place.  How heart-wrentching were the thoughts of physical suffering and denials that Jesus knew would take place then and now….it could only be for the deepest of love, that He came to set us free.
