The Teacher: Day 14

John Chapter 9

Jesus Heals A Man, Who Was Born Blind

Do Not Assume That Your Infirmities Have Come Because of Sin

When Jesus disciples asked him, “Rabbi, who sinned, this man or his parents, that he be born blind (John 9:2)”, He said to them…..”Neither this man nor his parents sinned, but this happened so that the work of God might be displayed in his life (John 9:3).”  This blind man could not see Jesus, but Jesus certainly saw him.  If we come to know or grasp anything of Jesus, it is because He first has known us.  After Jesus healed this blind man, those who had seen him could not believe it was  him.  They said, “isn’t this the man we have seen begging”?  They could not understand how he was healed (they did not believe).

Oh No, It’s The Sabbath Again

Beginning with verse 13, we see the ‘Pharisees begin the norm, they investigate the blind man’s healing.  It’s the same old charge against Jesus.  They said, “He does not keep the Sabbath”.  The zeal of the ‘Pharisees is for their rites and rituals.  I also believe they feel very threatened by Jesus and His message of perfect wisdom and holiness.  The message is very foreign, to these learned men of the Scripture.  They know the Scripture, but apparently don’t believe it.  They are most interested in power.

I really like the (now healed) blind man’s final comment to the Pharisees, in verse 33.  He said, “if this man were not from God, He could do nothing.”  The ‘Pharisees just could not bear to think that Jesus could be the Messiah, because His teachings were contrary to their traditions and rituals.

Jesus Teaches of Spiritual Blindness

When Jesus heard that the ‘Pharisees had thrown the blind man out, He found him and asked, “Do you BELIEVE in the Son of Man”?  The blind man said,”who is this man sir?  Tell me so that I can BELIEVE in Him”.  Jesus said, “you have seen him, and you are speaking to him, right now”.  The Scripture says that the man BELIEVED and Worshiped Him (verses 35-38).

You claim to see, but you do not desire light and knowledge (you are spiritually blind)….this is what Jesus said to the Pharisees in verse 41.

Thought to ponder:  Christ is most valued by those who have felt the need and want of him.  It is the blind who come away seeing; it is the weak who become strong; it is the one who mourns who comes away rejoicing.

Scripture to ponder: “I am the good shepherd; I know my sheep and my sheep follow me”.  John 10:14
