Resolve
I am writing this on New Years Eve, 2009. This is that time of year when we think about ‘Resolutions’ for the new year. Just what does it mean to make a resolution? It is the process of resolving. “It is the act of analyzing a complex notion into simpler ones” (Merriam-Webster online dictionary). It is the act of answering or solving. Did you know that “courage” is a synonym for “resolve”? It implies firmness of mind and will in the face of extreme danger or difficulty. To put that into perspective…..Usually, what we “resolve” to “resolve” has been a difficulty for us, or an area of life that could use some improvement, or our attention.
The Call To Extreme Discipleship
My “resolve” (you can call it a new year’s resolution, if you want to) is to answer the call to obedience by Jesus, “To Follow Him”. When Jesus called “The Twelve” to follow Him, He was asking them to walk somewhere that was unknown to them…no questions asked. He asked them to listen and learn. The word “disciple” means learner: one who receives instruction from another; a follower who receives and adheres to the doctrines of another. I read, somewhere, that “The Disciples were constant attendants of Christ”. In some cases, when Jesus said “Follow Me”, He was saying leave someone or something behind. Very extreme, or radical!
My “resolve” is to set my mind, or better yet, my heart firmly toward “Following”, “Listening” and “Learning”.
My “resolve” is to set my attention and accept the need for improvement. What a beautiful thought to ponder, to be “the constant attendant of Christ”.
Scripture to ponder: Matthew 19:16-30
