I had lunch with my daughter Kim today. We really like doing Bible Studies together. The one we are doing now is: “Living Your Life As A Beautiful Offering“, by Angela Thomas. It’s based on the ‘Sermon on the Mount. I won’t go in to the ‘day’ I had yesterday, except the fact that Kim and I both had that kind of day. Anyway, this weeks lesson is: “Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the Kingdom of heaven.” Matthew 5:3
We both felt we were ‘stuck’ on day 3 of the lesson. It is about “tripping over your failures, when you are spiritually empty” for whatever reason. For example, I’ll use myself. Yesterday I felt so unorganized….in reality I was overwhelmed (Kim had her own whatever goin’ on). Who wants to have to go to Jesus with a ‘poor spirit’. We’re Christ’s followers, after all. We should be strong, and thankful for what He has done for us, His love for us. We should be extremely perfected by now, right?
So, after discussing our failure(s) and making fun of ourselves (it always helps to do this, ya know), we decided to talk about the meaning of Matthew 5:3. The following is our interpretation, after consulting our trusty ‘Hebrew-Greek’ study Bible.
“We are blessed because of Christ’s sake (as a result of Him, we are fully satisfied), when we are in a state of ‘poor in spirit’ (helpless and in need of lifting up deep within us, because without Him, we have and are nothing at all). The blessing that we receive is the Kingdom (applies to God and Christ) of heaven (the residence of God)”
We decided there is always purpose in Christ’s order of things. This ‘poor of spirit’ is 1st on the list for a reason. We also talked about how hard it is for we ‘humans to give up control and let Christ order our lives. My ‘Wisdom Wednesday’ thoughts for today are these…..
1. He Is Always There, Waiting For Me To Get Over ‘Myself’!
2. If I Never Needed Him, I Wouldn’t Know How Much I Need Him!
3. Acknowledge My Helplessness On A Regular Basis….Preferably Every Day, Every Hour, Every Minute, Every Second!
4. Make “Poor In Spirit” A Lifestyle, For Christ’s Sake, So That I Might Be Fully Satisfied!
I am so glad that The Lord is willing to spend a lifetime (my lifetime on this earth) healing me, delivering me, turning my face upward (where it belongs), helping me…………etc. etc. etc. AND revealing His Word!
Oh, and my ‘hubby’ says, (for organization) make a list! Okay, I have my ‘A’ list (most important to do’s), my ‘B’ list (somewhat important to do’s), and my ‘C’ list (not so important to do’s). NOW WHAT? I think I’ll just throw the ‘C’ list away! Just kidding (haven’t made a list yet)…I’m gonna make 1 list and let Jesus toss the not important stuff out!
