Begin by Descending
Most of us would not intend to fall into a pit. I certainly did not intend to fall in. I was angry with the situation. I was hurt by the family offender. I was frustrated when this person wouldn’t even acknowledge that the offense happened. I had no idea how to deal with a person who protects themselves to the point of throwing their own child to the wolves, to protect themselves. When this person kept lying in defense, the situation became intense. It was an unintentional pit that I fell into because I took my eyes off of Jesus. I was blinded by my emotions. Please hear me, I am not trying to justify my emotions. There’s no excuse for sin.
How do we get out of the “pit”?
First of all, we apologize. Apologize to God. Ask for forgiveness and the wisdom from above that only He can give! Apologize to the person you are angry or frustrated with. The perfect apology is: I’m sorry for what I have done, with no justification attached and no strings attached. Hard? You bet!
Next, we wait patiently on the Lord. Psalms 40:1-3a says,
“I wait patiently for the Lord; he turned to me and heard my cry.
He lifted me out of the slimy pit, out of the mud and mire;
he set my feet on a rock and gave me a firm place to stand.
He put a new song in my mouth.” NIV
If you read Psalm 27 (Day 5) you know that the Lord is our stronghold, in any situation we face. Again we are reminded to seek Him and ask Him to teach us and lead us in a straight path.
Luke 10:41-42 says,
“Martha, Martha, the Lord answered, you are worried and upset about many things,
but only one thing is needed. Mary has chosen what is better,
and it will not be taken away from her.” NIV
We all know the story of the sisters, Mary and Martha. For us the moral of the story is: Each day presents it’s options for dealing with life and where we place our focus. The choices we make give insight into what our values are. Jesus clearly tells his friend Martha that she is focused on and worried about many things. But, only one thing is NEEDED, and that one thing is to make herself AVAILABLE TO HIM. That one thing is to place her focus ON HIM and HIS PRESENCE in her life, just as David did, in the passage of scripture (Psalm 40:1-3a) above.
Today, I want to leave you with this quote.
“Do you wish to rise? Begin by descending. You plan a tower that will pierce the clouds? Lay first the foundation of humility.” Quote by Saint Augustine
