Why Did They Follow?
Yesterdays assignment was to read Matthew 4:18-25. Verse 25 says that “great multitudes of people followed Jesus“. Why did they follow Him? Why do we follow Him? The multitudes of people followed Jesus because His miracles proved His authority was from God the Father. I also believe they were touched by His great compassion for them, and definitely His teaching. All of this drew them to Him. We also, have been drawn to Jesus by His authority from God our Father. Can you remember what it was like to be drawn to Jesus for the first time? Everything seemed fresh and new for me. I’m sure that the multitudes (or least a great many of them) that followed Jesus that day, felt that fresh new perspective. After all, they had been listening to priestly authorities all their lives, telling them that their access to God was only through them (the priests). And, that they could never live up to the law. They probably viewed God as untouchable and far, far away. Their only salvation was through the sacrifices the priests made for their sins. Then Jesus appears with His message of hope, His compassion, and teaching of the Kingdom of God. Jesus was telling them that He could forgive their sins, once and for all. Jesus was telling them, God loves you.
The Word tells us that Jesus is compassionate. Read: Matthew 9:36; Luke 7:13; James 5:11
In these past few years of my life, I have been learning so much about our compassionate Lord. He has been so faithful to me and my family. I have witnessed the bonds of sinful chains being broken and discarded in my family, and being exchanged for the desire for the Compassion of Christ. It is all, nothing less, than miraculous. I want to go even deeper still. Over the past couple of years, the Lord has totally changed the attitude of my heart. The only explanation I can give you is this: The Word and Christ’s teaching, is purging and purifying my heart. I’m not “THERE” yet, by all means. It is an ongoing, pressing on process toward the prize.
Today’s first assignment is to ask the Lord to open your hearts to Jesus, as your teacher. Turn your heart to the voice that is teaching. Jesus Christ is the Preacher of the Beatitudes, the Sermon on The Mount. He is the most qualified Preacher to teach us this ‘Condition of Supreme Well-Being’. Know also, that Jesus will always take us “where we are”. He knows we are not perfect. He knows our weaknesses. Believe, that He will accept you from ‘Right where you are’.
Assignment #2 is to read Matthew 5:1-12.
Thought to Ponder: “Attitudes can be changed through persuasion and we should understand attitude change, as a response to communication”. Quoted from Wikipedia.
Jesus is communicating to us, through the Beatitudes.
May our response be, change in the attitudes of our hearts.
